It was a black Wednesday for the people of Irunda Ile, Yagba East Local Government as bandits and operatives of the Nigeria police reportedly killed four members of the community.
According to reports, tension escalated in the area as youths protesting an earlier bandits attack which claimed two lives blocked the road in their community.
Our reporter gathered that the arrival of the police at the scene didn’t help matter as the protesting youths attempted to forcefully use the police guns to give the bandits a hot chase into the bush, an overture which the police resisted.
In the ensuing mêlée, two young men were said to have been shot dead by the police ‘accidental discharge’, with one of them dying at the scene.
Eyewitness account said the bandits had earlier in the day attacked part of the community killing two out of the three vigilantes on watch; a development that led to the youth’s protest.
While the protest was ongoing, some policemen came to the scene and were urged to followed the path of the bandits.
”They informed the police of the attack and urged them to assist the community. The police refused; prompting the youths to engage them in heated arguments.
”The arguments escalated, and in the process there was accidental discharge leading to the death of the two young men”, a chieftain of the community, Chief Sunday Oni David stated.
The State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara confirmed the bandits attack on the community to our reporter via telephone, he however said the angle of the police struggling with the protesting youth was not made known to him.
